The Interdepartmental Research Centre on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) for the Environment, Agroo-food and New Materials (CERMANU) of the University of Naples Federico II was officially established on 2006 (Decreto Rettorale n. 3005 del 02/08/2006), and activated November 1st, 2006 as by D.R. n. 3701 del 18.10.2006. Its statute was upgraded on 2014, following the new Statute of the University of Naples Federico II (art. 33, comma 2)

Mission

CERMANU promotes, develops and puts in practice interdisciplinary and multidiciplinary research
of relevant interest on the study of the molecular components of complex systems in the different environmental comaprtments (soil, water, air), in the agrofood matrices (primary and secondary products) in the biological materilas and in new inorgano-, organo-, and biocomposite materials. In particolar, CERMANU intends to favour the scientific synergism and integration among the specific competences and know-how in the above-cited domains in relation to the use of advanced modern physical-chemical technologies, and, especially, of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. Moreover, CERMANU aims to develop and boost translational research also in collaboration with National research centres (CNR, ENEA, CRA, etc.) and Regional Centres of Competences (CRdC) on issues of interest to CERMANU (Agro-food production, Analysis and monitoring of Environmental Risk, industrial and technological applications of Biomolecules and Biosystems) Similarly, the CERMANU Interdpartmental Centre strictly cooperates with the inherent scientific sectors of the Departments which have deliberated to participate to CERMANU (D.R. n. 258 del 3 febbraio 2014).

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

The laboratory of CERMANU contains two magnets Bruker Avance Ultrashield da 300 e 400 MHz.

 The probes used in the 400 MHz magnet are the following:

- BBO 5mm direct probe for the multinuclear analyses in liquid state; all 1D and 2D NMR techniques are conducted.

- BBI 5mm direct probe for the multinuclear analyses in liquid state (inverse T/R coils to improve resonance of 1H nucleous in respect to X nuclei; all 1D and 2D NMR techniques are conducted.

- uTXI 0.8-1.6 mm microprobe, for 1H, 13C and 15N analyses in liquid state; small samples volumes can be loaded in  100 μL NMR tubes; dedicated to trace samples but highly soluble in deuterated solvents; all 1D and 2D NMR techniques are conducted.

- HRMAS with 4mm rotors (15kHz max rotation speed) for 1H e 13C analyses of semi-solid samples (fresh tissues, gels, whole food samples, etc.); all 1D and 2D NMR techniques are conducted.

The probes used in the 300 MHz magnet are the following:

- CPMAS with 4mm rotors (15kHz max rotation speed) for multinuclear analyses of solid state samples;

- High Power Diffusion (HPD) probe for 5 e 10 mm tubes, for protons diffusion experiments (Diff30) at high power on highly viscous samples (biological and mineral oils, waxes, thick colloids, etc.);

- 1H-MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) for spectroscopic analyses in 5, 8 and 10 mm tubes; proton-based magnetic resonances images are obtained through measurements of Spin density, T1, T2 and Diffusion.

31P-MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) for spectroscopic analyses in 8 mm tube for the 31P nucleous.

Mass Spectrometry

GC/MS. Gas Cromatography/Mass Spectrometry. One Perkin Elmer TurboGold GC/MS with long quadrupole for analyses of compound up to 200 Da, by both electronic impact and chemical ionization.

LC/MS. Liquid Cromatography/Mass Spectrometry. A Shimadzu systems couple an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) to an Electrospray (ESI) ionization source to a mass spectrometer consisting in an ion trap and a time of flight (IT-TOF). This LC/MS system detects molecular ions with an accuract up to the fourth significant digit, and is capable of MS10 fragmentations of ions before detection.
